Bedfordshire beat Norfolk in final over thriller to win EOE Development 2017
Bedfordshire Development beat Norfolk Development by 10 runs in the final East of England Development Competition match of the season in a winner takes all affair to win the title for the first time.
Bedfordshire won the toss at Manor Park on Tuesday 5th September and elected to bat first. Their innings was built around an excellent innings from K Ali who top scored with 87 and A Momi 54 to set a total of 265 for 8 wickets from their allotted 50 overs. The pick of the Norfolk bowlers was Matthew Taylor who took 3-59 from his 10 overs.
In reply, Norfolks innings started on the back foot with two early wickets to leave them 30/2. However, a mature innings from 17 year old Oscar Binney who scored 59 helped to re-build the innings including some lusty blows to take the score beyond 100. Bedfordshire then got on top once again to restrict Norfolk to 143/6 with 20 overs to go and were placed nicely to win the game. Hudson De Lucchi (47) and Matthew Taylor (40) then added 80 for the next wicket to take the score to 223/6 and gave Norfolk an excellent chance of victory. Unfortunately, Taylor and De Lucchi fell in consectutive overs to leave Norfolk reeling on 228/8. Joe Everett batted exceptionally well and gave Norfolk another chance of victory and with 11 to win off the final over and 1 wicket in hand, the game could of gone either way. However, Joe Everett was run out off the first ball of the over attempting a second run thanks to an excpetional direct hit from the boundary to give Bedfordshire victory by 10 runs. The pick of the Bedfordhire bowlers were S Zai (3-31) and H Mahmud (2-45).
This was a tough defeat for Norfolk to take but congratulations must go to Bedfordshire who ended with 5 victories from 5 matches to win the title for the first time.
