The off-spinner received the Frank Edwards Trophy at the annual general meeting of the Minor Counties Cricket Association at Lord’s, following a remarkable season for Norfolk when he topped the bowling averages for the MCCA Unicorns Championship.
Brown was presented with the trophy by England Cricket Board chairman Colin Graves at the AGM yesterday, which was also attended by former Kent captain Matthew Fleming, who lives in Norfolk and is the current president of Marylebone Cricket Club.
“It was nice to get the trophy presented to me by ECB chairman Colin Graves,” Brown said. “I was just delighted to win it at the young old age of 42!”
Brown took 38 wickets at an average of 15.34, with a best of 7-47 and five wickets in four consecutive games, as Norfolk finished level on points with Cambridgeshire in fourth place in the Unicorns Championship.
That level of consistency also saw the former Lancashire and Essex second XI bowler win the Richard Lane Player of the Season trophy at Norfolk County Cricket Club’s recent AGM, after a season in which he took his 500th wicket in all forms of the game for the county.
It was also announced that Brown will be handing on the one-day captaincy for the Unicorns Knockout Trophy to Ashley Watson next season, although he will continue to coach the team.
The ECB spin consultant, who plays for Horsford in the East Anglian Premier League, will continue as captain of the Championship team though.
“It was a lovely afternoon and quite a nice way to end the year for me,” Brown continued.
“We’ve got winter nets with the under-15s and the centre of excellence on Friday and then the ladies, and then that’ll be it for me for Christmas.”
